Can you name America’s first movie studio? Back in 1893 Thomas Edison built a barn-like structure on a turntable so it could rotate toward the sun. It had a huge window in the ceiling to provide light for long days of filming. Located in West Orange, N.J., the studio was covered in black tar paper, hence the nickname Black Maria (pronounced maRYa).
