Arts+Tech Night, where technology combines with creativity

Light, sound, illusion and artistic vision will illuminate four floors of an industrial artist space owned by Peck School of the Arts on Wednesday, Dec. 16.

The public is encouraged to explore the exhibits at Arts+Tech Night from 6 to 9 p.m. at Kenilworth Square East, 1925 E. Kenilworth Place.

Arts+Tech Night is a technology-centered interdisciplinary art showcase featuring projects by 30 juniors and seniors working toward a bachelor’s degree in the Interdisciplinary Arts & Technology program, as well as students enrolled in arts courses that address technology in other ways.

Sundance: Shorts Lineup Includes Jason Reitman, Bryce Dallas Howard

The Sundance Film Festival on Tuesday unveiled its Shorts lineup for 2016. This year's selection of 72 short films includes a host of fest veterans including Jason Reitman (the director brought his first feature, Thank You for Smoking, to Sundance in 2006) and Bryce Dallas Howard (who co-starred in Book of Love, which debuted at 2004's event).

Reitman will be on hand with his Roast Battle, which chronicles the raunchy Comedy Store contest. The film is playing in the Documentary Short section. Howard directed Solemates, told from the perspective of shoes, which revolves around a couple's journey through life.

Slamdance has announced its Special Screenings, Beyond, and Shorts programs for their 22nd Film Festival. The programs present bold DIY films by a variety of filmmakers from all over the world and include 23 World, 13 North American, and 13 U.S. Premieres.

UWM Union Theatre, Milwaukee LGBT film fest keep alternatives coming

The enthusiasm for world and art-house cinema and other alternative programming at the Milwaukee Film Festival is shared by two other film-savvy local institutions: the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Union Theatre series, with screenings nightly, and the Milwaukee LBGT Film/Video Festival, which is in its 28th year.

Nohl Fellowship winners announced

Five winners have been selected for the Mary L. Nohl Fellowship, the most prestigious regional prize for individual artists.

For the first time in the fellowship's 13-year run, the prize comes with a larger financial gift and is given to a more select group, five artists instead of seven.

Selected from a field of 158 applicants, the five winners include two in the category for established artists, which includes a cash prize of $20,000, and three in the category for emerging artists, which comes with a $10,000 prize.

In “Jáaji Approx.”, filmmaker Sky Hopinka takes viewers on an abstract journey through places, time and a life.

The seven-minute experimental film, which has already won a number of awards, combines breathtaking scenery, Ho-Chunk stories and music and an exploration of the bond between father and son.

Hopinka, a filmmaker enrolled in graduate school in UWM’s Peck School of the Arts, grew up in the Pacific Northwest, but wanted to re-engage with his father and his father’s people in Wisconsin’s Ho-Chunk Nation.

Three decades on, UWM’s LGBT Film Festival focuses on families in flux

The Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival is celebrating its 30th anniversary and festival director Carl Bogner is looking forward to the biggest program in recent memory. Over 11 days, he and UWM’s Peck School of the Arts will bring more than 30 feature films and shorts programs to the city, all centering around LGBT themes — but many not defined exclusively by those themes.
Bogner hasn’t been involved with the festival for all three decades — 2015 marks his 17th year — but in his time, he says, LGBT filmmaking has come leaps and bounds, and that’s reflected in this year’s work.

Like the classic entrepreneurs of yesteryear, Jim Becker started his company, Epic Creative, in a garage.

After graduating from the distinguished film and video department at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee – rated one of the top 20 in the world – Becker set up a boot-strap video production shop in a Port Washington in 1989. He moved out of the garage to West Bend in 1992, where he has been expanding ever since.

Can you name America’s first movie studio? Back in 1893 Thomas Edison built a barn-like structure on a turntable so it could rotate toward the sun. It had a huge window in the ceiling to provide light for long days of filming. Located in West Orange, N.J., the studio was covered in black tar paper, hence the nickname Black Maria (pronounced maRYa).
