On Saturday, April 18, Prospect Avenue’s Kenilworth Building will open its doors to the public for its annual family friendly, interactive show-and-tell event, Kenilworth Open Studios (KOS). From 11 a.m.-2 p.m., all six floors will be teeming with 100-plus of UW-Milwaukee’s best and brightest eager to share the ways they are changing the world with art and technology.

Built by the Ford Motor Company in 1914, the Kenilworth Building passed into Uncle Sam’s hands during World War II to function as a munitions factory. Later, after a stint as General Motors’ Spark Plug Division, the building was acquired by UWM and served primarily as a storage warehouse until being refurbished and repurposed in 2006: half to be used as dorms and half to house faculty and graduate students studying art and design, theater, dance, film and music.

Film/Theatre - TERRY BYRNE TAKES THE LONG ROAD TO THE COLLEGE

It is not everyday that a serious car accident can change someone’s life in a positive way. For Terry Byrne, a professor of communications at the College, that’s exactly what happened – his life was shaped by a drunk driving accident.

Byrne, known by his students as just Terry, has worked at the College since 1987. His many years of working in the entertainment industry have not only given him a surplus of knowledge to pass on to his students, but has also given him priceless anecdotes.

“You can tell he not only knows what he is talking about, but that he truly enjoys teaching it,” said Jacqueline Ilkowitz, a senior communications major who has taken five classes with Byrne.

MILWAUKEE (WITI) — The season finale of FOX’s hit drama “Empire” promises to have millions glued to their televisions Wednesday, March 18th. And for this, a Milwaukee native says he’s grateful, since he has more than a little something to do with the show’s success!

Eric Haywood is a former UW-Milwaukee film student, and he’s now a writer for “Empire.”

“We started writing the show over the summer — back in June,” Haywood said.

Film - Milwaukee Man is Creating an Empire with Hit Television Show

From writing screenplays to directing and producing movies and music videos, Milwaukee native Eric Haywood has built an impressive resume.
The most recent addition to his career is writing for the powerful family, musical drama “Empire”.
Empire, which debuted in January was co-created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong who also collaborated on the movie “The Butler”.

Film - Milwaukee Visionaries Project

It started as a UW-Milwaukee lead literacy project to help educators understand how media messages affect kids. Now, it's turning out award-winning film projects. For the last 5 years, Milwaukee Visionaries Program (MVP) has been giving students in Milwaukee a chance to share their stories through the art of filmmaking. "We use production of animation and video, making space for urban kids to be able to tell their stories," says Kim Cosier head of Art Education at UWM's Peck School of the Arts. 

Held on Thursday evenings at Bruce-Guadalupe Community School in Walkers Point, students from Milwaukee middle and high schools are creating their own films. From writing their stories to fabricating the sets to helping with the musical scores, MVP students work closely with MVP faculty and volunteers. "They learn how to do after effects in final cut pro and premier," says Cosier. "They are working with high quality tools, giving them access to stuff that isn't available to most kids."

Monday, Oct. 20 through Sunday, Oct. 26: The 29^th Annual Milwaukee LGBT Film Festival continues through the week and concludes on Sunday

The Milwaukee LGBT festival continues through this week and provides another seven full days of high-quality programming that would otherwise never find its way to the big screen. Let me point out a few of the options available this week that I find particularly interesting. Tuesday screens the Andy Warhol/Paul Morrissey picture San Diego Surf. Edited according to Warhol’s notes after he was shot in 1968 this story of a couple whose troubled marriage is tested when they open their beach house to a bevy of surfers is a film well-worth checking out. Thursday sees the ‘poetically realized’ Moroccan film Salvation Armythat details a young gay man’s coming of age through a series of strikingly quiet vignettes, and closing night sees the Australian picture 52 Tuesdays come to town. Shot sequentially (only on Tuesdays for 52 weeks) with a non-professional cast, this could appear to be a gimmick, but its story of a transitioning mother and the daughter with whom every Tuesday for over a year is set aside for is said to have a cumulative power that is quite moving. There are many other options playing this week, so please do check out the website’s schedule and treat yourself to one of many wonderful evenings of great LGBT cinema!

INOVA - Greater Milwaukee Foundation Mary L. Nohl Fellowship recipients include alumni and faculty

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation Mary L. Nohl Fellowships for Individual Artists exhibition is currently on display at INOVA. Of the seven fellowship recipients, the Peck School is well represented - with four alumni including Eddie Villanueva (BFA Art & Design), Andrew Swant (BFA Film), Cris Siqueira (MFA Film), Josh Weissbach (MFA Film), and Associate Lecturer in Art & Design Ray Chi. Film - Film alum earning acclaim for The Box Trolls and more!

Film alumna Brooke Duckart worked as a Hair and Fabrication Animator on Liaka studio's The Box Trolls, which just earned its place as Liakas highest opening weekend box office production! Brooke has also earned acclaim for her own stop motion animation, Cat Waco, her work on Kate Balsley's The Cucaranchula, and Christopher Carson Emmons' Serial Daters Anonymous, being shown at this year's Milwaukee Film Festival. Congratulations to Brooke!
